I gave this 2 Stars because I didn't see any major errors in the writing and the story was okay, but I didn't like it and I don't plan to get any more of the series. The story was too dark and depressing. Some of my problems: It was pretty unbelievable that they could build so much stuff on the ships, yet the ships were constantly falling apart. They could build star gates to travel to other star systems but couldn't fix their ship? That doesn't make sense.
As someone else said, the first shuttles to enter a new planet always crashed and nearly everyone died, but then the next ones usually made it okay. As far as I could tell the ships were out of contact with the mother ship as soon as they hit the atmosphere so why did the second wave make it okay? Why didn't they send in unmanned drones? None of it made sense.
In spite of the story's other problems I did kind of like the main character, Maeve, and was curious about what she'd do in the next book so I read the preview at the end. Unfortunately I was left totally confused. Maeve wasn't even in the next chapter that I read, instead it was about some girl who'd married Maeve's friend and was pregnant and was worried that her baby would be infected with something.
I didn't care for it at all so I'm finished with that series. I don't recommend it.

Better World Fractured Era Legacy Episodes Book 1 eBook Autumn Kalquist Reviews
Gripping, beautifully written, and just too damned dark for me. Every page drips with death and despair. The author's site gave me a free copy of another story, "318", which was more of the same. If you enjoy stories about characters enduring their way through pain and hopelessness, by all means give Ms. Kalquist a try. I can tell she's great at it, even if it doesn't suit my own tastes.
This book is about struggle between lifestyle and an alien planet. Are young woman coming to grips with her sexuality and the problems that it causes in an enclosed environment of Space is an interesting story. At one point she wants to commit suicide but in another she understands the need to persevere and to survive. The characters seem to be a little shallow and almost caricatures of personality types. A little more development however would make this a really good story.
My biggest complaint about this book is that it's too short! It's about an hour read, so I'd consider it a novella. I wish it was longer, I wish the story continued where it stopped. I really did not expect a lot out of this book, I downloaded it for free. I was so wrong. The story is well-written, fast-paced, easy to understand and riveting!
The premise is kind of unique in that the human race is living on a bunch of ships and jumping from star system to star system to find a new Earth. Humans were in kind of a caste system and they had to obey or else "risk their chances of survival." It was understandable without having to get all the background of why they were there and what happened to Earth. The story revolves around the main character, which I appreciate because I find a lot of post-apocalyptic/space books tend to focus heavily on the setting and the characters can be underdeveloped. This was the opposite. The main character isn't extremely fleshed out because it's so short, but you get to know what makes her tick and what motivates her by the end of it. You see her mature greatly in a realistic way, under the circumstances. She really grows into her role.
I like the writing style, the author doesn't get bogged down in the details of how the ships/machinery works or lengthy explanations. I tend to skim over that kind of writing. There are scenes where you don't need to explain what every single person in the room is doing. You can simply guess that all the workers who were loading up the space vehicle left the loading dock when the outer doors open and the vehicle leaves the space ship. We can figure that out quite easily. I think some books can benefit from good scene setting so you really have a mental image of what's happening, but since this book is more about the character and her story I'm glad the author didn't focus on that.
The ending is dark. Some people might call it hopeful, but I felt it was pretty dark. I picked up the sequel, which starts 2 years later, and that's really dark too. I like dark though. The endings for both books really stuck with me in a way that I couldn't just start reading a different book after (which I can do for most books). I was reeling in shock, I had to pause to digest what just happened and clear my mind.
I'm definitely reading the other books in this series but I would love to see more of Maeve! Even though I can guess how her story ends...
Solid, entertaining, soft science fiction. I have to admit, I was not immediately drawn to the characters and the plot seemed a little bit cliche. I stopped reading. But yesterday I started it again to give it another chance, and I'm glad I did. This is a great story with great characters, and what appears to be cliche twists into something definitely not cliche. The pacing, once the initial scene is set, is tense and exciting. This book is obvious in its set-up for the rest of the series but the story-line internal just to this book is exciting and satisfying. You'll want to read the rest of the series because you'll want to know more, not because you've been duped into a cliff-hanger that requires another purchase. Well worth reading, and the rest of the series is now on my must-read list.
